Written by Sanjeev Rai, VP: Partnerships & Enablement, Impel Overseas Consultants
APS India has confirmed dMAT sessions for 16 January and 13 March 2027. Understand affected qualifications, exemptions, fees and APS documentation timelines.
dMAT is an additional APS requirement for specified undergraduate disciplines. Affected students can submit complete APS documents early, but their final certificate requires the verified dMAT result.
Indian students planning master's studies in Germany have an important new deadline to consider.
APS India has officially confirmed the next two sessions of the Digital Master Test (dMAT) for 2027. Registration is now open, and the test has become a mandatory component of APS documentation for specified groups of master's applicants.
The announcement is particularly relevant to students preparing for the Summer 2027 and Winter 2027/28 intakes.
Next dMAT Test Dates for 2027
| Test cycle | Confirmed date | Registration status |
|---|---|---|
| January session | 16 January 2027 | Open |
| March session | 13 March 2027 | Open |
Candidates must select their preferred date and available test centre during registration through the official g.a.s.t. portal.
Official registration: Register for dMAT through g.a.s.t.
The exact registration closing dates and score-release timelines should be checked in the registration portal.
What Is dMAT, and Why Has It Been Introduced?
The Digital Master Test is a standardised academic aptitude assessment introduced as an additional component of APS documentation for selected Indian master's applicants.
It is administered by g.a.s.t., the German organisation responsible for test administration, while APS India continues to verify academic documents.
Importantly, dMAT does not replace APS verification, academic transcripts or the admission requirements of German universities.
Its results form part of the applicant's APS documentation and are reflected on the APS certificate.
Who Must Take the dMAT?
According to APS India's updated announcement, the requirement is determined primarily by the applicant's previous undergraduate qualification, not simply the master's programme they intend to pursue.
The following undergraduate fields are affected:
| Undergraduate qualification | dMAT requirement |
|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.Eng: all specialisations | Required |
| Commerce, Accounting and Finance | Required |
| Economics | Required |
| Business Administration and Management Studies | Required |
| Other undergraduate disciplines | Generally not required unless the programme falls within an affected major field |
This distinction is important for students changing academic fields.
For example, a student with a B.Tech in Food Technology applying for an MSc in Management would fall within the requirement because all B.Tech and B.Eng specialisations are included.
Likewise, a commerce graduate applying for a master's programme in another discipline may still be affected.
For multidisciplinary degrees such as certain BA, BSc or BCom programmes, APS India advises examining the core curriculum or major field of study. Applicants in borderline cases should seek clarification or follow APS India's guidance.
Are There Any Exemptions?
Yes. APS India has announced transitional exemptions.
Applicants generally do not need dMAT for an existing APS procedure if:
- •They completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026, even if documents were shipped later.
- •They shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026, even if verification remains pending.
- •They have already received an APS certificate for the completed procedure.
PhD applicants, bachelor's applicants and participants in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programmes are also outside the current requirement, subject to the applicable conditions.
Students should carefully check the official exemptions before registering or paying the test fee.
Can Students Submit APS Documents Before Taking dMAT?
Yes. This is one of the most important clarifications from APS India.
Affected applicants may submit their complete APS application documents before taking dMAT.
APS India may begin verifying those documents in advance. However, the final APS certificate can only be issued once the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and its result verified.
Students must submit all other required academic documents with their initial APS application. They cannot use the later dMAT submission to add missing or updated academic qualification documents to the same APS procedure.
For applicants targeting 2027 university deadlines, submitting APS documentation early may help avoid unnecessary delays.
dMAT Test Fee and Centres in India
The official test fee is €150, payable during registration.
APS India lists test centres in several Indian cities, including:
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.
The final available locations and seats will be displayed in the registration portal.
Hyderabad is not included in the currently published list, so applicants from Telangana should check the portal for the most convenient available centre.
Bookings are subject to seat availability, and APS India cannot reserve test appointments.
Does a Low dMAT Score Mean APS Rejection?
Not automatically.
APS India has clarified that dMAT is not a standalone pass-or-fail requirement for APS certification.
The dMAT certificate is mandatory for affected applicants, but a low score does not automatically result in APS refusal.
German universities independently decide how they consider the test result during their admissions assessments.
Similarly, a high dMAT score does not guarantee university admission or compensate for an unrecognised undergraduate qualification.
Applicants should also verify the recognition of their institution and degree through anabin and applicable UGC requirements.
What Should Students Planning Germany in 2027 Do Now?
Students targeting the upcoming intakes should take the following steps:
- •Check their undergraduate qualification against the affected disciplines.
- •Verify APS status and exemptions, particularly the 29 June 2026 transitional provisions.
- •Register for a suitable test date through the official g.a.s.t. portal if dMAT is required.
- •Submit complete APS documentation early, rather than waiting unnecessarily for the dMAT result.
- •Review university deadlines and eligibility requirements independently, including academic credits, language scores and programme-specific conditions.
Students should not assume that booking or taking dMAT guarantees timely APS certification or university admission.
The Impel Perspective
The introduction of dMAT makes early application planning even more important for Indian students considering Germany.
The key is to assess academic eligibility, degree recognition, APS requirements and university deadlines together.
At Impel Overseas Consultants, we recommend beginning with the student's undergraduate qualification and intended master's programme before establishing an application timeline.
This helps avoid unnecessary test registrations, missed exemptions and delays caused by incomplete documentation.
Conclusion
With the next dMAT sessions confirmed for 16 January and 13 March 2027, affected applicants should review their eligibility and register early.
The most important points are straightforward: dMAT applies to specified undergraduate disciplines, it is an additional APS requirement, and students can submit complete APS documents before receiving their test results.
Understanding these rules now can help applicants prepare more effectively for Germany's 2027 master's intakes.
