Frequently asked

Everything you need to know about studying in Italy

What IELTS/TOEFL/PTE scores do Italian universities require?
Undergrad: IELTS 6.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.0, PTE 55. Postgrad: IELTS 6.5 (no band <5.5), TOEFL iBT 4.5+, PTE 62+. Bocconi wants IELTS 7.0 for MSc, GMAT 680+ for MBA. Polimi Design accepts IELTS 6.0 + strong portfolio. Duolingo 105+ accepted at Polimi, Bocconi and most publics. MOI letters are widely accepted at public universities if your degree was fully English-medium.
How many hours can I work part-time on an Italian student visa?
Non-EU students on a permesso di soggiorno per studio can work up to 1,040 hours per year (about 20 hrs/week during term, or full-time in summer). Minimum wage is set by sector (there's no national minimum) — typically €8–12/hr for retail/hospitality, €12–20/hr for tutoring, €15–25/hr for design/tech internships. You'll need a codice fiscale (tax code) and health insurance.
What is the post-study residence permit and EU Blue Card route?
After graduation you convert your student permit to a 12-month 'permesso di soggiorno per attesa occupazione' to search for work. Land a role paying €39,347+ (2025) with a bachelor's or higher and you're eligible for the EU Blue Card — 2-year renewable permit, family reunification included, lets you move to any EU country after 18 months. 5 years continuous residence = EU long-term residence (Carta di Soggiorno UE).
Which Italian MBAs and Master's programs are worth it?
SDA Bocconi MBA (FT Top-50, GMAT 660+, avg post-MBA €95K), MIP Polimi (technology MBA), LUISS Business School (Rome, GMAT 620+), MIB Trieste. For design: Polimi School of Design (world #7), Domus Academy, IED, NABA. For fashion: Marangoni, Polimoda. Bocconi grants ~30% scholarships to Indian applicants; Polimi Design accepts strong portfolios in lieu of GRE.
What scholarships are realistic for Indian students in Italy?
Italian Government MAECI scholarship (€900/month + tuition + insurance for 6–9 months, deadline Jun). Invest Your Talent in Italy (STEM-focused, €8,900/yr + tuition waiver, deadline Nov). Bocconi Merit Award (up to 100% tuition), Bocconi Isabella Meneghini (need + merit, up to full tuition). Polimi International Merit Scholarship (€5–11K/yr). DSU regional grants (Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont) — up to €5,570/yr + free accommodation + meals for ISEE-eligible families.
Which courses have the best career opportunities in Italy?
Italy offers strong opportunities in Fashion Management, Design, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Business Management, and Food Technology, with growing demand across manufacturing and design industries.
How do I get PR in Italy after graduation?
Route: Student permit → post-study 'attesa occupazione' (12 mo) → EU Blue Card or regular work permit → after 5 years continuous legal residence, apply for Permesso di Soggiorno UE per Lungo Soggiornanti (EU long-term residence, transferable across 27 EU countries). Italian citizenship is possible after 10 years of residence (or faster via ancestry, marriage, or naturalisation categories). Italy has one of the more generous family-reunion routes in the EU.
What's the real cost of studying and living in Italy in INR?
Public university tuition (income-linked ISEE, most Indian families qualify for lowest band): €900–4,000/yr (₹85K–3.6L). Private: Bocconi MSc €15–17K/yr (₹14–15L), Polimi International track €4K/yr (₹3.6L), Domus Academy €30K/yr. Living: Milan €900–1,300/month (₹85K–1.2L), Rome/Turin €700–1,000 (₹65K–90K), Bologna/Padua €600–900 (₹55K–85K). Two-year masters total: ₹15L (public) to ₹50L (Bocconi).
What's life like for Indian students in Italy?
Italy hosts 12,000+ Indian students (2024–25), concentrated in Milan, Rome, Turin, and Padua. Milan's Via Padova and Rome's Torpignattara have full Indian ecosystems — dosa restaurants, groceries, Diwali events, Sikh gurdwaras, Hindu temples. Italian bureaucracy is legendarily slow (codice fiscale, permesso, sanitary card all take patience), but food and coffee culture are unmatched, high-speed rail connects Milan–Rome in 3 hours, and every EU capital is a Ryanair flight away. Winters mild (5–10°C in south), summers Mediterranean (25–32°C).
When should I apply for Italian intakes and what documents do I need?
One main intake: September/October for the academic year. Public universities apply Dec 2025 – May 2026 via Universitaly + Uni-Italia; Bocconi, Polimi Design, LUISS, IE and private schools open Sep–Feb rolling. Standard file: transcripts (with Dichiarazione di Valore or CIMEA statement, ₹8K), IELTS 6.0+/TOEFL iBT 80+, portfolio for design/architecture, SOP, 1–2 LORs, GRE/GMAT for Bocconi/LUISS. Type D visa takes 4–8 weeks after acceptance.
How employable are Indian graduates in Italy?
Bocconi (94%), Polimi (91%) and LUISS (89%) report placement within 12 months. Top recruiters of Indian talent: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pirelli, Leonardo, Prada, Gucci, LVMH Italy, Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG, McKinsey, BCG, Accenture, Amazon Italy, Vodafone, Unicredit, Intesa Sanpaolo. In-demand roles (2025–26): designer (€30–48K), mechanical engineer (€32–50K), consultant (€38–62K), data scientist (€34–52K), fashion buyer/product manager (€30–55K).
