The test-prep timeline that actually works

12 months out — diagnostic. 8 months — target score locked. 4 months — first attempt. 2 months — retake window.

#timeline

Most students start test prep too late. The timeline that consistently produces the highest scores:

T–12 months: full-length diagnostic (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE for language; GRE/GMAT/SAT for aptitude).

T–10 to T–8 months: structured prep — coaching or self-study for 12–15 hours/week. Target score locked by month 8.

T–4 months: first official attempt. Even if you hit target, this gives room for a retake.

T–2 months: retake if needed. Don't stack two tests in the same 3-month window.
